Welcome to MotionApprentice.com. My name is Chuck (I’m the surly-looking guy in the logo). Ever since I was a teenager, animation and motion graphics design has been my greatest passion. I animate as a hobby. I animate for work. I make a very comfortable living creating motion graphics all day, every day. The only trouble is, I’m not very good at it. Well, OK, maybe that’s a bit harsh. I’m obviously good enough to make a nice living doing it – but like a lot of other animators and designers, I don’t view myself as particularly good at what I do. I look at sites like Behance and dribble, and I look at the work coming out of Royale and Buck and Blur, and dear god does seeing that stuff make me feel like a failure! I know, I get it, a lot of that work is made by big teams and we all have our individual skillsets. We all have some things that we happen to be a little more talented at, and other things we need to work on. I’d say that within the mograph industry my main talent, and something that has been important enough to my clients that I continue to get hired, is that I’m FAST. I can output a lot of animation very quickly. But I think that speed is also my “Achilles heel.” Sometimes I don’t sit and contemplate composition, or color theory, or any of the other design principles enough. I certainly don’t sketch out ideas for compositions or designs enough. I work in a very fast-paced environment. Having said that, I want to get better. I want to improve my design and animation chops. I want to get to the point that I can create designs and animations that are so full of charm that they wouldn’t look out of place sitting next to work done by Buck. So, that’s my goal, and that’s why we are here. MotionApprentice.com is a site dedicated to the journey of becoming a better mograph artist. I have lots of plans for blog posts and videos and other content that will help me, and help YOU become a better artist. I hope you stick around and learn with me. I think it will be fun.
To kick off this new journey of mine, I created a quick weekend project about my daily routine. It’s called “Daily Routine” which is really clever, right? Check it out below. Until next time!
